Screens All Day? A Doctor’s Routine for Tired Eyes

Why screens tire your eyes

We blink about 15 times a minute in conversation — and roughly 5 times staring at a screen. Fewer blinks mean a broken tear film, which means burning, blurring that clears when you blink, and that gritty 4 p.m. feeling. Add a slightly wrong prescription and poor lighting, and you have digital eye strain.

The routine I give my patients

  • 20-20-20, with a timer: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Phone reminders make it stick.
  • Screen below eye level: looking slightly down lets lids cover more of the eye, slowing tear evaporation.
  • Task lighting: match room brightness to your screen; never work in the dark with a bright monitor.
  • Preservative-free drops: use them before symptoms start on heavy screen days, not after.
  • Computer lenses: a dedicated desk prescription with blue-light filtering beats “making do” with progressives.

When to come in

If strain persists after two weeks of this routine, your prescription, binocular vision, or tear film needs professional attention. A 45-minute exam finds the real cause — and usually a simple fix.
